Beginning Saturday, February 4, CPL will be the proud host of the historic Teenie Harris exhibit, Photographer: An American Story. The collection, which will be on display at Harold Washington Library Center, is the first complete retrospective of the work of late Pittsburgh Courier photographer, Charles “Teenie” Harris.
Teenie’s extraordinary collection made its world premiere last October at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. And now, with the support of PNC and the National Endowment for the Humanities, it will arrive in Chicago, followed by Birmingham and Atlanta.
For nearly 40 years, Harris built a legacy upon his stunning documentation of life in Pittsburgh’s African-American neighborhoods. From everyday moments to significant events in American history, his body of work constitutes arguably the largest and most complete photographic documentation of a minority community in the United States.
Even more impressive? Of the 80,000 images captured throughout his career, Teenie rarely required multiple shots; a skill that earned him the nickname “One Shot.” He is widely considered a bona fide pioneer of photojournalism.
Chicago Public Library is pleased to share this rich cultural exhibit filled with nearly 1,000 photos that have been carefully preserved over time. Many who have seen Photographer: An American Story call it an American treasure. Make plans to visit HWLC and see for yourself!
