“Your intellect may be confused, but your emotions will never lie to you.”

We are heartbroken over the death of a wonderful human being and great friend to CPL, author and film critic Roger Ebert. Rest in peace.

What is the price of sex? It’s shocking. It’s shadowy. And almost certainly not what you think.

You’re invited to join us in Cindy Pritzker Auditorium at Harold Washington Library Center next Thursday, January 12, for our first free movie screening and discussion of the new year — Human Rights Watch: The Price of Sex.

Intimate and revealing, this feature-length documentary explores the world of young Eastern European women who have been drawn into a world of sex trafficking and abuse. The story is told by the brave ladies who have refused to be silenced by shame, fear and violence.

Emmy-nominated and Bulgarian-raised photojournalist Mimi Chakarova (pictured above), takes us on a personal journey, exposing the sinister world of sex trafficking across Europe into the Middle East. Filming undercover and gaining extraordinary access, Chakarova illuminates how, although some women have escaped to tell their stories, sex trafficking thrives.

Watch the trailer for the 2011 Nestor Almendros Award Winning film, The Price of Sex:

The 6 PM screening will be followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker Mimi Chakarova and Liesl Gerntholtz, Executive Director of the Women’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch.

Visit CPL’s official event page for complete details.
